- How much can I increase the resolution?
- Up to 4× in each dimension. A 1920×1080 image becomes 7680×4320 (8K) at the 4× setting. The AI model fills in plausible detail rather than just stretching pixels, so edges stay sharp and textures look natural even at the highest multiplier.
- Does increasing resolution really add detail?
- Real-ESRGAN was trained on millions of photo pairs at different resolutions, so it learns what fine detail should look like given the surrounding pixels. It cannot recover information that was never captured — it cannot unblur a truly out-of-focus shot — but for clean images that simply have too few pixels it produces results close to what a higher-resolution capture would have looked like.
- Is it actually free with no catch?
- Yes. There is no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no premium tier. The tool runs entirely in your browser — there is no server cost to recoup, which is why there is no paywall.
- What is the maximum file size I can upscale?
- There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. The practical constraint is your device's memory: most phones and laptops handle source images up to about 12–15 megapixels comfortably at 4×. Very large images (20 MP+) work best at 2× or may need a device with more RAM.
- Will the upscaled image lose quality from re-encoding?
- JPEG and WebP files are re-encoded at quality 0.92 — visually transparent for photographs. PNG files are saved losslessly with transparency intact. Each image downloads in the same format it was added in.
- Can I increase the resolution of multiple images at once?

- Do my images get uploaded to a server?
- No. Decoding, AI upscaling and re-encoding all happen in your browser tab through WebGPU or WebAssembly. No image, filename or pixel ever leaves your device. The only network request is a one-time 4.9 MB model download, cached after first use.
- What formats does it support?
- JPEG, PNG and WebP — the three most common image formats on the web. Each file is output in the same format it came in, so a PNG with transparency stays a transparent PNG after upscaling.
How the AI increases resolution
Traditional upscaling — bicubic, Lanczos — just interpolates between existing pixels. The result is larger but blurry, because no new information is added. Real-ESRGAN works differently: it was trained on millions of image pairs at low and high resolution, so it learns what sharp detail should look like given the surrounding context. When it upscales your image it generates plausible texture, clean edges and fine grain that the original resolution could not represent.
The model runs entirely on your device through WebGPU (or WebAssembly on older hardware). It processes the image in overlapping tiles at 4× and stitches them together seamlessly. At the 2× setting it still computes the full 4× pass internally and downsamples to 2×, which gives a sharper result than a native 2× model would.
If your image already has enough pixels but looks bad — compression artifacts, noise, dull colour — resolution is not the problem.
