The sweet spot for a 4K output is a source near 960×540. Anything larger overshoots 4K, which is usually fine — a downscale from 5K looks sharper than a stretch from below.

- What source size do I need to hit exactly 4K?
- 4K UHD is 3840×2160 pixels. At 4× upscale, that means any source close to 960×540. If your original is smaller, the output falls below 4K; if it is larger, the output overshoots it. A 1280×720 frame, for instance, comes out at 5120×2880 — above 4K, which is fine because a downscale from there looks sharper than stopping at 4K from a smaller source.
- Can I convert a photo to 4K resolution online for free?

- Real-ESRGAN adds plausible detail, not just more pixels. The model was trained on millions of high-resolution and low-resolution image pairs, so it knows what a sharp edge, texture or strand of hair should look like at 4× and draws that rather than averaging what was there. The result is not the photograph a better camera would have captured, but it is substantially sharper than what a simple resize produces.
- Is there a file-size or resolution limit?
- There is no file-size limit because there is no upload — everything runs locally. The AI pass reads up to 2.5 megapixels on a WebGPU device (0.7 MP on CPU-only ones) so the output stays under the 40-megapixel ceiling. Larger sources get downscaled before the pass, and the preview caption names both the input and output dimensions.
- How long does the 4K upscale take?
- A few seconds per photo on a device with WebGPU (most desktop Chrome, Edge and recent Firefox), since the model runs on the GPU. Without GPU acceleration the pass falls back to single-threaded WebAssembly and can take a minute or so — a progress bar and Cancel button keep it manageable. iPhone and iPad deliberately use the slower CPU path because WebKit's WebGPU support is not yet reliable.
- Does the photo leave my device?
- No. There is no server endpoint — decoding, the AI pass and re-encoding all happen inside your browser tab. The only network traffic is a one-time 4.9 MB model download on first use, cached afterwards. After that the tool works entirely offline.
- What if I only need 2× instead of 4×?
- Switch the scale button from 4× to 2× after the photo loads. The model still runs a native 4× pass internally and derives the 2× output from it, so you get the same quality with a smaller file. If resolution is not the problem at all and the photo just looks flat or compressed, the enhance photo quality page runs the same model at 1× — better quality at the original size.
Why 4K matters — and when it does not
4K UHD (3840×2160) is the native resolution of most modern monitors and TVs. If your photo will be viewed full-screen — a desktop wallpaper, a presentation slide, a product shot on a listing page — having 4K pixels means every detail stays crisp at 100% zoom. At 300 PPI, a 4K image also prints at about 13×7 inches without interpolation, covering a standard photo print.
It does not matter when the photo will only be seen at a small display size. A social media thumbnail, an avatar, an inline chat image — these never render anywhere near 3840 pixels wide, so upscaling them to 4K produces a large file with no visible benefit. In those cases, a 2× pass is more useful: it doubles the dimensions, cleans up edges, and keeps the file manageable. Switch the scale from 4× to 2× on this page to do exactly that.

No upload, no size cap
The 4K upscale runs in your browser through WebGPU or WebAssembly, so there is no server to receive your photo, no queue, no daily allowance and no file-size limit imposed by an upload form.
