- How can I enhance photo quality for free?

The AI scale starts at 1× on this page, so you get a cleaner photo at the same dimensions unless you choose to upscale.
- Can it fix a photo that was ruined by compression?
- That is the AI engine's best case. Real-ESRGAN was trained on photos degraded with real-world JPEG compression, noise and blur, so it removes blockiness and ringing around edges and redraws plausible texture where compression flattened it. A photo forwarded through several chat apps typically comes back noticeably cleaner at 1×.
- Does enhancing quality change the photo's size or resolution?
- Only if you ask it to. At the default 1× setting the output has exactly the same pixel dimensions as the input — the quality pass cleans up artifacts, noise and softness without resizing anything. Switch to 2× or 4× if the photo is also short on pixels; the upscaled result keeps the same aspect ratio.
- Will it lose quality when saving?
- The tool re-encodes JPEG and WebP at quality 0.92 — visually transparent for photographs — and PNG losslessly with transparency intact. Each file downloads in the same format it came in, so nothing gets silently converted.
- Can it improve grainy or noisy photos?
- Yes. High-ISO grain and sensor noise are part of the degradations the AI model was trained to reverse, so a noisy low-light shot usually comes out smoother while keeping real edges. Very heavy noise can come back slightly painterly — the split preview shows you exactly what changed before you commit.
- Is the quality enhancement done by real AI?
- Yes — Real-ESRGAN (the realesr-general-x4v3 super-resolution network, BSD-licensed) running on your own device through WebGPU or WebAssembly. The one-time download is about 4.9 MB of model weights plus the runtime, cached after first use. There is no server-side processing at all.
- Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?
- No. Decoding, enhancement and re-encoding all happen in your browser tab — there is no upload endpoint, so no photo, filename or pixel ever leaves your device. That also means no upload wait: a 15 MB photo starts processing instantly even on a slow connection.
- Can I enhance the quality of many photos at once?
- Up to 20 per batch. One set of settings applies to all of them — which fits the usual case where a whole set of photos came off the same camera or the same chat export — and Download all writes every enhanced file in one go.
What “better quality” actually means here
Most photos that look bad fall into one of four failure modes, and each gets a different treatment. Compression damage — the blocky, smeared look of a photo that went through a chat app or an aggressive save — is handled by the AI pass, which was trained specifically on JPEG-degraded images and redraws the texture compression destroyed. Noise and grain from low-light shots go through the same network, which separates real edges from sensor noise better than any blur-based denoiser. Tone problems — washed-out contrast, dark exposure, flat colour — are measurement problems, not detail problems, so the Auto fix stage handles them instantly by stretching each colour channel back to full range. Softness sits in between: mild softness responds to the sharpness slider, real blur needs the AI pass.
The reason this page presets the AI scale to 1× is that quality and size are independent axes. Upscaling a damaged photo just gives you a larger damaged photo; cleaning it up first is the part that makes it look better. If you need more pixels too — for print, or a crop that got ambitious — switch the scale to 2× or 4× and the same pass upscales while it cleans. No upload, no quality lost in transit
Everything runs in your browser through the Canvas API and on-device AI — there is no server that receives your photograph, so nothing is re-compressed by an upload pipeline, stored, or inspected. The only download is the one-time 4.9 MB AI model on first use; after that the enhancer keeps working with the network switched off.
