- Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit and no premium tier. The AI model runs on your own device, so there is no per-image server cost. Process one image or a hundred in the same session at the same quality.
- Can it fix JPEG compression artifacts?
- That is the AI engine's strongest case. Real-ESRGAN was trained on images degraded with real-world JPEG compression, so it removes blockiness and ringing and redraws the texture that compression flattened. An image forwarded through chat apps or saved at low quality typically comes back noticeably cleaner.
- Will it change my image's dimensions?
- Not by default. This page presets the AI pass to 1×, meaning you get cleaner quality at the exact same pixel dimensions. If you also want a larger image, switch to 2× or 4× — the same pass upscales while it enhances quality.
- What image formats are supported?
- JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP. Each file downloads in the same format it came in, with PNG and WebP transparency preserved. The AI pass handles up to 4 megapixels on GPU-accelerated devices (0.7 MP on CPU-only) and outputs up to 40 megapixels when upscaling.
- Can it improve a noisy or grainy image?
- Yes. High-ISO sensor noise and grain are among the degradations the AI model was trained to reverse, so a low-light shot usually comes out smoother while keeping real edges intact. Very heavy noise can produce a slightly painterly look — the split preview shows exactly what changed.
- Do my images get uploaded anywhere?
- No. Decoding, enhancement and re-encoding all happen inside your browser tab. There is no upload endpoint — no image, filename or pixel ever leaves your device. The only network traffic is the one-time 4.9 MB AI model download on first use, cached afterward.

What the AI does to your image
Low image quality comes from three main sources, and each is handled differently. Compression damage — the blocky, smeared look after a JPEG save at low quality or a pass through a chat app — is what the AI engine handles best. It was trained on images degraded with real-world JPEG compression and reconstructs the texture that encoding destroyed. Noise and grain from low-light or high-ISO shots go through the same network, which separates real edges from sensor noise more effectively than simple blur-based denoisers. Tone problems — flat contrast, dark exposure, muted colour — are measurement issues rather than detail issues, so the Auto fix stage corrects them instantly by stretching each colour channel to full range.
The 1× preset on this page is deliberate: most quality problems do not need more pixels. Upscaling a damaged image just produces a larger damaged image. Cleaning it up first is the step that actually matters. If you do need more pixels afterward — for print or a tight crop — switch to 2× or 4× on the same page, or start from the enhance picture resolution page, which is preset to 4× and shows the resulting dimensions.
